Customs Forms & Cross-Border Moving Requirements

Understanding the Customs Process for Cross-Border Moves

Understanding the Customs Process for Cross-Border Moves

Understanding the Customs Process for Cross-Border Moves

Moving between Canada and the United States involves more than transportation — it requires proper customs documentation and compliance with border regulations. At Canada Pro Moving Inc., we guide our clients through the customs process to ensure a smooth and efficient transition. Whether you are relocating to or from the United States, understanding the required forms and documentation helps avoid delays, inspections, or unexpected charges at the border.

When moving across the Canada–U.S. border, all household goods and personal belongings must be declared to the appropriate customs authority. Depending on the direction of your move, you will be dealing with either the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Both agencies require full disclosure of all items being transported, along with supporting documentation. Failure to properly declare goods can result in delays, penalties, or refusal of entry.

Required Customs Forms & Documents

To import household goods into the U.S., the following documents are typically required:

  • CBP Form 3299 (Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles)
This is the primary document used to declare household goods entering the United States.
  • Valid passport and identification
  • Visa or immigration documentation (if applicable)
  • Detailed inventory list (in English)
  • Bill of Lading or shipping documents

Household goods may qualify for duty-free entry if they have been owned and used for at least 12 months and are intended for personal use.

Inventory Requirements

When entering Canada with household goods, you will need:

  • Form BSF186 (Personal Effects Accounting Document)
  • Valid passport and immigration documents
  • Two copies of a detailed inventory list of all goods

To qualify for duty- and tax-free import, all items must be declared upon entry and included in your inventory list.

Inventory Requirements

Restricted and Prohibited Items

Inventory Requirements

A complete and accurate inventory is one of the most critical parts of the customs process. Both Canada and the United States require a detailed list of all items being transported, including descriptions, approximate values, and quantities.

Restricted and Prohibited Items

Restricted and Prohibited Items

Certain items may be restricted or require special permits, including:

  • Food, plants, and agricultural products
  • Firearms and weapons
  • Certain medications
  • Alcohol and tobacco

All items must be declared to customs authorities upon entry.

Proof of Identity & Status

 Travelers must provide:

  • Valid passports
  • Residency or visa documentation
  • Entry permits (if applicable)

Customs clearance typically cannot be completed until the owner of the goods has arrived in the destination country. Proper planning and document preparation are essential to avoid delays in delivery.
